This Week at the Grocery...

on Monday, January 5, 2009

...was not too bad. Spent about 80 dollars, about 15 of which ended up being needed to fulfill my obligations as snack person this week for my youngest's classroom. Still - everything but the Goldfish I bought for them was on sale.

I forgot a couple of things, darn it, that are not on sale, I'm sure - so I'll be going back for coffee (absolute staple as far as my husband is concerned, haha) and "pullups" for the son I have that has issues with pee and sleeping so hard. We're working on it, but for right now, he's more comfortable with those, and I don't have a better solution that won't stress him out. I hate them - they are expensive. I'm also ashamed I got started with them - they are sooo awful for the environment. :P I've thought of switching to more sustainable products, but the son we are talking about is also the son we are in the process of getting evaluated for Asperger's - it's just not a battle I'm ready to undertake, right now.

Still - I have to say I love my little grocery even if their coffee and "pullups" are not on sale this week. :P It's a chain - Publix - and this particular store (the only real grocery for about 15 miles) is more geared to the high-end tourists. (I live near Seaside, and other similar places.) However, they still highly value their locals, especially in this economy. The people that work there are courteous and pleasant, and also very concerned about fairness and value.

Anyway - they often have a clearance rack worth visiting, and have buy1get1 sales - these are both a big help for us. Also, right now Publix is doing this everyday staples thing - every month they pick certain products they use as loss leaders, more or less, to provide value to those who are pinching their pennies. For example - this month their store brand white bread is .89 cents a loaf. Now, I prefer to make my own, but if I'm in a pinch and looking for unhealthy bread for, say a vegan burger, which is my husband's vibe - prefers unhealthy bread with that sort of food, it can be handy. A lot of times the products in question are not vegan, and therefore not relevant, but still - they can come in handy.

I planned everything out ahead of time for this week - I found a meal planner template I like - I'll blog about it soon - gotta get to work on a couple of projects.

Morning, y'all!

So This is Me...

I've decided to blog about my adventures of living on a crazy tight budget, and attempting to live both lightly (read greenly/ecologically) and frugally. We live in a crazy jumble/tumble household - 3 kids, 2 parents (I'm one), 3 cats and one dog. Here I'll mention my crazy-great scores at the stores, meals and lowering costs, and more. I look forward to hopefully seeing you back! Wish me luck, y'all! ^_^
